April in 2/3-1

Hello families,

We can’t believe that the semester is already almost over!  Where has the time gone?!  There was a lot happening in the month of April, starting off with Week of the Young Child, parent teacher conferences, and all of our other planned activities.

Week of the Young Child

To celebrate NAEYC’s Week of the Young Child, we celebrated with themed days, along with special activities throughout the week.  The children got to make their own shakers, cook green eggs and turkey ham, choose colors they wanted for their rainbow grilled cheese, practice some yoga and breathing techniques, do various art activities, and to wrap up the week, make dog treats for Mission III and meet both Mission III and Victor E!  Our class also decided last minute to participate in the center wide talent show!  While waiting for some of the ‘acts’ to arrive for the talent show, multiple classrooms or children throughout the center chose to show their talents.  Superheroes have been a common interest in our class this semester.  Melissa had found a superhero song, Superheroes Unite by Koo Koo Kanga Roo, that the children have loved, so we performed that for the center.

Letters, Numbers, and Shapes

The children have really taken an interest to letters, numbers, and shapes.  We have been reading letter books, incorporating letter recognition toys into our interest areas, along with counting materials.  Some of the children are beginning to identify specific letters and recognize letters that are in their names!  Shapes have also become a common interest with the children.  They’ll identify them and have even begun to name shapes that they don’t see every day or aren’t as common as the basics.  We have incorporated activities into our learning for the children to match shapes to one another.  We take this opportunity to tell them the differences between shapes and how many sides each has.

Outdoor Adventures

With nicer weather throughout this month, we took some walks around campus.  We took a long walk to the NIU lagoon, visited a rock garden, Huskie Hill as the CDFC teachers like to call it, and a ‘secret’ garden between Graham and Gabel Hall.  Taking these long walks, we thought our class would get worn out, but they all did so well walking the duration of the walks!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend a conference for your child.  We have enjoyed working with your child, watching them grow throughout this semester.  As the summer approaches, we are excited to see their growth as we begin to transition towards preschool!

As the semester comes to an end, we want to thank you for being amazing families to work with.  We love your children and seeing their learning experiences and growth each and every day.

Sincerely,

Krysten and Melissa
