Happy New Year Parents & Families!
It’s been a choppy start to the new year with shorten weeks due to weather, but we have continued to push through and have encouraged the children to get back into the swing of things!
At the start of the month, we introduced classroom jobs. Previously we had a “helper of the day”. Now each child is responsible for a daily task. We have added new jobs, such as table setter, stuffed animal helper, and greeter. We want the children to feel empowered by contributing to the classroom community! Make sure to ask your child about their weekly job!
We are finishing up the water study and wanted to explain some concepts the children have been learning throughout this study. We discussed ways we use water every day. Such as washing hands and brushing teeth. We read, “A Cool Drink of Water by Barbara Kerley.” This story depicts ways people from all over the world drink and conserve water.
We also used our snow totals and ice as a tool to introduce the concept of liquids vs. solids. We demonstrated how ice cubes melt or become a liquid in just seconds when holding in our hands. We watched water freeze into a solid by placing water in a bowl in our freezer.
We discussed concepts of sink or float by using small items from around the classroom. During small group, each child made a guess and then tested their items. Items ranged from feathers, pinecones, marbles, to a paper clip.
Lastly, the children are loving there was an old lady series by Lucille Colandro. Each story is a silly twist on the classic “There was an Old Lady that Swallowed a Fly.” She uses humor and rhyme to reveal a fun surprise at the end of each story. Also, her stories encourage recall and sequencing skills.
We look forward to more growth and learning this school year!
❤️
