Infant One Week 2 News

Hello Infant 1 Families!

I hope your first week of social distancing is going well. I understand these uncertain times can be very stressful; however, on the bright side this is a chance to take time away from your normally busy schedules to get some extra hugs and snugs from your little ones. As always, if you are needing any additional support or have questions please feel free to reach out and we will help in any way we can, or help find the appropriate resources.  Below I have attached some fun activities for your child. These activities can be done with items from around your home and allow for different adaptations.

The first activity shows how to make a simple sensory bag. The great thing about sensory bags is you can use almost anything you have in your home to make them. This example uses shaving cream and food coloring, but you are more than welcome to use other sensory materials such as water, flour, baby oil, or rice and combine them with small toys or other colorful items. This sensory activity not only helps your child with cognitive development, but can also be relaxing for you as well. If your child has teeth and tends to be more oral, I would suggest tapping the bag to a flat surface so they do not put the bag in their mouth. Infants primary way of learning about their world is through their senses, especially taste. This activity works with their sense of sight and touch. You can ask your child open ended questions such as: How does it feel? What colors do you see? What do you think will happen when we mix these two colors? Although you may not be able to hear them, their little minds are still asking and answering questions through their exploration of the activity.

Our next activity is the Finger Family Song. For this activity you can print off pictures of family members and tape them to your fingers. For each family member you will sing a version of, “Mommy Finger, Mommy Finger, Where are you? Here I am, Here I am, How do you do?”. Once you have gone through all the family members on your fingers, you can go over each family member with them. This activity helps your child with their social emotional and cognitive development.
